The following notes are for every individual to ponder over and act upon. Please take some time and carefully read through them. If there are any queries or you require clarification on any aspects of these notes, please contact the group leader or the Aalim.

There are four vital (obligatory) points for you to act upon before you embark on your spiritual journey of Hajj. These are as follows:

1. Taqleed. It is crucial that you are a muqallid. It is vital that your actions and procedures in worship are according to the rulings of that Mujtahid. Please inform the group leader or Aalim of your Marj’aa e Taqleed as there are slight variations in rulings.
2. Khums. The entire money you have utilised for your journey must be Paak i.e. all religious and other dues have been paid. It is wajib to have fulfilled the right of the Twelfth Imam (A.S) before your journey commences.
3. Wudhu. This is one of those actions that people pay least attention to but is the most important act ensuring the correctness of your ibadaat. Please check that your wudhu is correct, ask an Aalim if unsure.
4. Qira’at. Correct pronunciation of the Zikr with sound Makhraj. It is vital that at least your wajib actions i.e. Namaaz, Talbiyyah (Labbayk) etc are recited with the correct pronunciation.

Some of the highly recommended points for Hajj are as follows:

It is highly recommended to write your will or notify someone of your wishes as you are leaving for such an important journey.

Make a list of all the ibadaat that you would like to perform whilst you are on this spiritual journey. It is considered one of the best acts to complete an entire Quran if possible inside the Haram in Makkah/Madinah.

Before leaving home, perform Ghusl with the niyyat for ‘travelling to Makkah for Hajjatul Islam, Qurbatan Ilallahi Ta’alah’. During your ghusl, ask Allah to wash away your sins as you wash your body. Pray that your Nafs is made paak and any Najaasat inside your body is removed. After the ghusl, perform two Rakaat Namaaz with the intention of ‘Qurbatan Ilallahi Ta’allah’ and two Rakaat Namaaz e Hajaat.

Pray for all mo’mineen, relatives and friends for their safety and for your safe return.

Ask forgiveness from all the people around you (family, relatives, friends and colleagues) for any wrongs or injustices you may have done to them.

Before leaving home, give Sadaqa, recite the Tasbih of Hazrate Fatema (A.S), then recite Surah Al-Hamd once while looking to the right, once while looking to the left and once while looking straight ahead. Recite Ayatul Kursi once, Surah Ikhlaas 11 times, Surah Qadr once, Surah Naas once and Surah Falaq once. Also recite the following dua:

Keep an Aqeeq ring and a small Holy Quran in your possession.

Whilst in the car, bus or train on the way to the airport (or port etc) say
‘ALLAHU AKBAR’ 100 times, SALAWAT 100 times

Also anytime during the journey by car, plane or any other method of travel, keep reciting ‘ALHAMDULILLAH’, ‘SUBHANALLAH’, ‘ASTAGHFIRULLAH’, ‘SHUKRAN LILLAH’, ‘MASHA’ALLAH’, LAA HAWLA WA LAA QUWWATA ILLA BILLAHIL ALIYYIL ADHEEM’ and salawat as many times as possible.

Remember to recite Surah Ikhlaas 3 times each time the car, bus or plane is about to depart. Recite also the following dua :

Also, anytime while travelling, recite Kalema often, give Sadaqa and recite ‘A’UDHU BILLAHI MINASH SHAITANIR RAJEEM’ as many times as possible.

It is very important that for all your actions during Hajj, that niyyat (intention) is made (verbal or non verbal) of QURBATAN ILLALLAH.

In Masjide Nabawi, the best Ibadaat is to recite your Qadha Namaaz. It is recommended to pray 2 Rakaat Namaaz next to each of the 7 Sutoon (pillars) in the Masjid.

There is also a platform there where one should recite Quran and then recite 2 Rakaat Namaaz of Jaffare Tayyar. This Ibadaah will ensure acceptance of your Hajaat – insha’Allah (please do not forget us!)

Between the House and the Mimber in Masjide Nabawi, there is a ‘piece of Jannat’ where one should recite 2 Rakaat Namaaz. However this is not possible for the ladies because the area has been blocked off. Therefore, they should recite the 2 Rakaat Namaaz next to the gate that separates them from the ‘piece of Jannat’ to gain as much sawaab as possible.

When entering Masjidul Haraam, enter with the right foot and do one Tasbih of 'ALLAHU AKBAR’ and say ‘LAA ILAAHA ILLALLAHU WALLAHU AKBAR’. Also recite the following dua while entering and preferably learn it by heart :

When you see the Kaaba for the first time, ask for your three most precious wishes.

It is mustahab to perform 2 Rakaat Namaaz out of respect for the Masjid (Tahiyyate Masjid).

There is a golden pipe near Hijre Ismail where you ask for your Hajaat and here there is a greater chance that they are accepted. One should pray for those who have been unable to have children and Insha'Allah Allah will grant them children.

Do not forget to do Istighfaar and Dua on behalf of all your family, friends and marhumeen.

During Tawaaf, the best Ibadaat is the Tilaawat of the Holy Quran, any Surah’s that you may know by heart and especially any Qunoot Duas that you know by heart. You have also been provided with Tawaaf books that have recommended Duas for each round.

Recite as much Quran as possible in Masjidul Haraam and try to recite as many of your Qadha Namaaz as possible. Pray Namaaz for your marhumeen as well.

At the corner of the Kaaba, where the crack through which Hazrat Ali’s mother went in, one should ask for Hajaat and recite Duas.

At the well of ZamZam, or as close to it as possible, one should recite 2 Rakaat Namaaz for increase in Rizq.

Whilst walking between Safa and Marwa, keep in mind that Bibi Hajrah performed this act whilst in search for water for her son Prophet Ismail (A.S). When walking between Safa and Marwa, recite Tasbihate Arbaa and Qunoot Duas constantly. Also, recite Dua-e-Mashlool on Mount Marwa and ask for maghfirat. On Mount Safa recite Dua-e-Kumail and ask for Rizq.

It is not recommended (makrooh) for women to run between Safa and Marwa, they should walk. Men walk too, but they must run at a gentle pace in a certain place (these are indicated by green lights on the walls between the two Mounts). Try to step on the actual rock on the two Mounts of Safa and Marwa when you reach them.

At Arafat, do not waste your time. Instead do as much Istighfaar as possible because any sins that have not been forgiven on Laylatul Qadr and other such prestigious occasions will surely be forgiven here if you ask sincerely enough. Any other Duas are also accepted here.
At Arafat and Mina, arguments and conflicts are brought about very easily, so be sure to keep patient and tolerant at all times and DO NOT LOSE YOUR TEMPER.
When you go to Mina to stone the three Shaitans (Jamaraat), remember your own faults and the Shaitans inside you first, and then always keep in mind that you are hitting these Shaitans.
At Mina it is recommended to recite 2 Rakaat Namaaz in Masjide Kheef as many of our Ambiya (Prophets) have also prayed there.
It is mustahab to keep your Ihraam on after the obligations of Mina and complete the rest of your Hajj in the same state.
Finally, please remember that it is on the invitation of Allah S.W.T. that you are making this spiritual journey. It is a time for reflection of one’s self, seeking forgiveness and asking for your hajaat. Please do not waste your time on the journey on worldly matters. Please remember that it is also a test to reveal your true self. Avoid arguments, control your temper and look after your fellow hujjaj. Insha’allah your journey will not be wasted, acts of worship accepted and sins forgiven.
